GeoHub NI Help - Save Map Definition As

Save Map Definition As

Within the Map Definition dialogue, the Save Map Definition As tool GeoHub NI Save Map Definition Button allows you to give your map a name and to save different bookmarks for the map.

1. Click on the Show Map Definitions button GeoHub NI Save Map Definition Button on the toolbar to open the Map Definitions dialogue.

2. If you have no maps saved (which will always be the case on your first entry to the map viewer) the dialogue will show the message 'No Map Definitions defined'.

3. To save your current map click on the 'Save Map Definition As' tool. This is the centre tool on the Map Definition dialogue GeoHub NI Save Map Definition Button

4. Enter the Name for the map in the Definition Name field.

5. Enter a Bookmark Name in the Bookmark Name field.

  • Bookmarks are used to save certain map extents e.g. if you have a map that is zoomed to the whole of Northern Ireland you could give it the bookmark name of Northern Ireland (or another useful option might be to put in the current map scale as the bookmark). If you are zoomed in on the Belfast area you could give this bookmark the name Belfast.
  • You can have as many bookmarks as you want under the same Map Defintion. Each bookmark will have the same layers in the Table of Contents and on the map viewer, but they save different areas on the map so that these can be referenced quickly in the future.

6. When you have entered your Definition and Bookmark names, click on the OK button GeoHub NI Map Definition OK Button (if you want to cancel saving the map at this point, click on the Cancel button GeoHub NI Map Definition Cancel Button ).

7. When a map definition is saved, you can expand it to see the bookmarks associated. The Map Definiton name will have two small letters in brackets beside it. These are 'D' and 'A' and they signify that this Map Defintion is both the Default and the Active Map Definition.

  • If a map is set as the Default then this will be the map that the GeoHub Map Viewer opens with when that user logs on again in the future. It is possible to set any of your maps as the Default.
  • If a map is set as the Active map, this means that this is the map that is currently active (i.e. the map that is currently shown on the map canvas). It is possible to activate any of your saved maps at any time to view them.

8. To activate maps or set them as default you must right-click on the Map Definition name to use the context menu that appears. This contains a number of useful tools:

GeoHub NI Map Definition Context Menu

  • The first is 'Activate Map Definition'. This will activate the map so that its contents appear on the map canvas and in the Table of Contents. This is used to switch between your saved maps and view them in turn.
  • 'Mark as Default' is used to specify that you want this map to appear first when you re-enter the GeoHub Map Viewer in the future.
  • 'Delete Map Definition' allows you to delete the map from your saved maps.
  • If you have zoomed to a different extent on the active map that you would like to save for future reference, you can choose 'Bookmark Current Extent'. Give the bookmark a name and click OK. You will now see this new bookmark listed under your Map Definition name.

9. Another context menu exists if you right-click on any bookmark.

GeoHub NI Bookmark Context Menu

  • Here you can choose 'Zoom to Bookmark' so that you can quickly see the map at the extent that you recorded previously. You can also delete the bookmark if no longer required.

10. You can save as many different Map Definitions as you require. Each map can contain any combination of layers.
