GeoHub NI - Datasets - Topic Categories
Introduction
Every dataset hosted on GeoHub NI will have, as a minimum, metadata conforming to Version 2.0 of the Gemini metadata standard.
There will also be a supporting page on this website to provide more information about the data. These pages will be located under the Gemini Data Topic most suited to the dataset, see the right hand navigation panel for a full list of these topics.
Each page will expand on the metadata by:
- Identifing if access to the dataset is restricted or global.
- Including additional information on the dataset, how it was collected, why it was collected and how it is used.
- Describing the attributes used in the dataset.
- Identifing the geometry type used in the dataset.
- Providing a link to the dataset application page, if required.
- Providing links to other datasets and websites.
You can find out more about this standard by following the links at the bottom of this page.
Metadata
Metadata Field Name |
Obligation |
Attribute |
|---|---|---|
| Title | M |
GeoHub Layer Name |
| Alternative Title | O |
One or a number of short names, other names, acronyms or alternative language titles. |
| Originator | O |
Person or organisation having primary responsibility for the intellectual content of the data. |
| Abstract | M |
A brief narative summary of the dataset. It should describe the content of the dataset, the purpose and/or the applications for which the dataset was produced. Maximum length 255 characters. |
| Topic Category | M |
The main theme(s) of the dataset. Selected from a predefined list of 19 possible values. |
| Subject | M |
One or a number of subject categories. This is a free text field that allows a greater range of detail than the Topic Category field. |
| Dataset Language | M |
The language used in the dataset. Selected from a predefined list. |
| Data Collection Start Date | M |
The date on which collection of the dataset content commenced. |
| Data Collection End Date | M |
The date on which collection of the dataset content stopped. |
| Dataset Reference Date | M |
Dataset reference date is an identifying date for the data resource. It is a notional date of “publication” of the resource. |
| Frequency of Update | M |
The frequency with which modifications and deletions are made to the data after it is first produced. |
| Date of update of metadata | M |
The date on which the metadata was last changed. |
Spatial reference system |
M |
Name or description of the system of spatial referencing, whether by coordinates or geographic identifiers, used in the data resource. |
| North bounding coordinate | M |
The north bounding latitude. The North bounding latitude must have a value greater than the value of the South bounding latitude. |
| South bounding coordinate | M |
The South bounding latitude. The South bounding latitude must have a value less than the value of the North bounding latitude. |
| East bounding coordinate | M |
The East bounding logitude. The East bounding longitude usually has a value greater than the value of the West bounding longitude, except when the extent straddles the 180 degree meridian. |
| West bounding coordinate | M |
The West bouding longitude. The West bounding coordinate usually has a value less than the value of the East bounding coordinate, except when the extent straddles the 180 degree meridian. |
| Extent | M |
The extent of data resource by country or subdivision of country. An area approximating to the extent of coverage of the data resource should be chosen. Where the extent of the dataset does not coincide with any defined area or areas, then either the nearest equivalent including the area of coverage, or a set of multiple areas that make up the coverage should be provided. |
| Access constraint | O |
The restrictions and legal prerequisites for access to the data. Access constraints are different from Use constraints which concern its suitability for particular types of usage. |
| Use constraints | O |
The restrictions and legal restraints on using the data. Use constraints are different from Access constraints which describe limitations on access to the data. A dataset can have open access (e.g. to look at it), but restricted use. |
| Spatial resolution | O |
The measure of the granularity of the data (in metres). This should not be confused with precision which refers to the resolution of the measurements themselves. 1. For data capture in the field, it is the precision at which the data is captured. This may be the accuracy for topographic surveys, or the average sampling distance in an environmental survey. 2. For data taken from maps, it is the positional accuracy of the map. 3. For image data, it is the resolution of the image. |
| Data format | M |
The format(s) in which the data can be provided. |
| Vertical extent information | O |
The vertical domain of the data resource. This element should only be used where the vertical extent is significant, e.g. in geology, mining and meteorology etc. |
| Additional information source | O |
The additional information source may include a reference, such as a URL, to external information. |
| Lineage | O |
Information about the events or source data used in the construction of the data resource. This element is similar to Abstract, and some information may be included in either element. Further details included in an external file may be referenced. |
| Distributor - Contact title | M |
The role or position of the responsible person. This should be general job title or generic role for someone in a position of responsibility for the datasource. |
| Distributor - Name | M |
The name of the organisation supplying the dataresource. The name of the organisation should be given in full without any abreviations. |
| Distributor - Postal address | O |
The full formal postal address (as defined for example by Royal Mail) should be given, including the postcode. |
| Distributor - Telephone number | O |
The full telephone number by which individuals can talk to the organisation or individual. |
| Distributor - Facsimilie number | O |
The full telephone number by which individuals can communicate with the organisation or individual by facsimile. |
| Distributor - Email | O |
The internet email address which individuals can use to contact the organisation or individual. |
| Distributor - Web address | M |
The distributing organisation’s World Wide Web address. |
| Metadata standard name | O |
UK Gemini |
| Metadata standard version | O |
Version 2.0 |
